Forging a subject is an important part of the therapeutic process. Developing the capacity to make use of the therapist, other “others,” and to meet, subject to subject, is likewise a familiar therapeutic trajectory. Being open to experience that is not easily classified, that may even defy cognitive understanding, experience we may call trans-subjective or spiritual, can paradoxically add depth and meaning that may remain otherwise unavailable. We will examine the interplay between the ideas of Wildred Bion and the principles and practices of Buddhism. We will explore their overlap and differences, with a view toward unpacking this elusive and rich dimension of clinical work and human life.
