SUMMARY:Turning Ghosts into Ancestors: Waking Up from Trauma and Coming to Life.
DESCRIPTION:War trauma is a great teacher\, would that we could learn from it. It not only generates extensive dysregulation\, it engenders the most profound moral wounds; as painful as any bullet. It can also teach us about coming back to life: post-traumatic growth\, the conditions for change\, and how the healing process unfolds. It holds lessons for working with a range of other trauma. \nFor ten years\, the instructor and his team at Coming Home Project offered integrative residential retreats for thousands of veterans\, families and children from around the country. They uncovered a robust and reliable process called Turning Ghosts into Ancestors which helps transform anguish and restore aliveness\, hope\, growth\, and connection with others and self. Drawing from his book\, Waking Up From War: A Better Way Home for Veterans and Nations (foreword by H.H. the Dalai Lama)\, the instructor presents his pioneering integrative approach\, confirmed by peer-reviewed research\, that draws both from psychoanalytic and Buddhist principles\, seamlessly melded in a non-denominational relational setting. It was successfully adapted to help care providers and is being developed to help survivors of other cumulative trauma.

SUMMARY:Bion and the Buddha: To hold Infinity in the palm of your hand and Eternity in an hour.
DESCRIPTION:Forging a subject is an important part of the therapeutic process. Developing the capacity to make use of the therapist\, other “others\,” and to meet\, subject to subject\, is likewise a familiar therapeutic trajectory. Being open to experience that is not easily classified\, that may even defy cognitive understanding\, experience we may call trans-subjective or spiritual\, can paradoxically add depth and meaning that may remain otherwise unavailable. We will examine the interplay between the ideas of Wildred Bion and the principles and practices of Buddhism. We will explore their overlap and differences\, with a view toward unpacking this elusive and rich dimension of clinical work and human life.

SUMMARY:The Contributions of Mindfulness and Psychotherapy to an Integrative Model of Healing and Awakening
DESCRIPTION:In this seminar\, we explore how mindfulness practice enhances the attentional capacities of the psychotherapist while challenging and enriching certain premises of psychotherapy. We also examine the unique contributions of psychotherapy to emotional growth and how it complements mindfulness practice\, fills in important gaps\, and helps us take mindfulness into daily living\, especially relational experience. Each path is a full and distinctive partner in the evolution of a broader\, more inclusive narrative of what it means to be human. Each potentiates the other and helps generate a truly integrative model of development. Through their creative interplay\, each makes the other better at its own project: Variations on the themes of healing\, transforming suffering\, and liberating the finest human potentials. How? By creating a more experience-near\, comprehensive\, and representative framework; a path to becoming freer\, wiser\, and more peaceful\, alive\, and compassionate.
